Ijmāʿ

إجماع

The scholarly consensus of a generation on a legal ruling.

Definition

Ijmāʿ is counted as the third source after the Quran and Sunna, because a consensus is understood to rest on evidence from them. Claiming consensus is a serious matter: it requires that no qualified contemporary scholar dissented. Much of what is loosely called consensus in popular writing is in fact a majority position.
