Definition
A Hijrī year has twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, about eleven days shorter than the solar year. That is why Ramadan moves earlier each year relative to Gregorian dates. Month beginnings depend on moon sighting or calculation, so dates can differ by a day between countries.
