Introduction

The author

Abu Ja'far al-Tahawi (239–321 AH) of Egypt, a Hanafi jurist and hadith scholar trained by his uncle al-Muzani, a student of al-Shafi'i.

How it came about

Written as a statement of the creed of Abu Hanifa and his two companions, in a period of intense theological dispute.

Method and structure

A sequence of short declarative articles on God, prophethood, the Quran, divine decree, the afterlife and the community, without dialectic.

Standing in the school

Accepted across the Sunni schools as a summary of orthodox belief and commented on by Ibn Abi al-Izz and many later scholars.
