Malik ibn Anas (93–179 AH) taught in the Prophet's mosque in Madinah for decades and is the imam of the people of Madinah.
Compiled over some forty years, reportedly at the encouragement of the caliph al-Mansur, and revised repeatedly until only what Malik was confident of remained.
Narrations are arranged by legal chapter and followed by the practice of the people of Madinah and Malik's own ruling, making it at once a hadith collection and a book of law.
The earliest surviving work of its kind and the root text of the Maliki school; al-Shafi'i called it the soundest book on earth after the Quran in his time.
