Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudama al-Maqdisi (541–620 AH) of Jerusalem and Damascus, the leading Hanbali jurist of his age.
Written as a commentary on al-Khiraqi's Mukhtasar, expanded far beyond it into a survey of the positions of all the major schools.
Each question sets out the Hanbali ruling, then the views of Malik, al-Shafi'i, Abu Hanifa and earlier authorities, weighing the evidence for each.
Regarded across the schools as one of the great achievements of Islamic legal literature; al-Izz ibn Abd al-Salam said he did not feel at ease issuing fatwa until he had it.
